Undergraduate training

RUBi offers 2nd and 3rd year short bioinformatics modules to biochemistry students. There is also a recommended undergraduate course structure.

Recommended Subjects
1st Year CHE 1, CSC 1, MAT 1, STA 1, CEL 101*
2nd Year BCH 2, CSC 2, MAM 2 or MST 2
3rd Year BCH 3, CSC 3 or MAT 3 or MAM 3 or MST 3, MIC 202*
*Note: CEL 101 and MIC 202 are strongly recommended as additional credits. MIC 202 can be taken without MIC 201 so long as BCH 201 has been taken.

BSc Honours

RUBi does not directly offer BSc Bioinformatics Honours degrees but Honours projects can be done at RUBi in collaboration with various departments at the University. Further, RUBi offers 3 weeks bioinformatics Honours module to Honours students in the Biochemistry and Microbiology Department.


One-year MSc programme

The One-year Masters programme is offered over 11 months and incorporates 10 to 13 coursework modules as well as a research project (thesis) running partially concurrently throughout the programme. The programme has been successfully running since 2011 and is regularly over-subscribed. It has had some significant successes in producing bioinformatics researchers, and over 70% (10 out of 14) of completing students have continued in PhD programmes in various South African universities. Research MSc & PhD

Students may also elect to do the traditional MSc by thesis over two years, and of course, RUBi also welcomes PhD candidates.
